What this phase is
Pre-Method Reconstruction is the work of rebuilding material reality before any attempt is made to explain it.
It is not analysis. It is not interpretation. It is not argument. It is not even understanding. It is the reconstruction of time from institutional debris.
Why this phase exists
Institutions do not fail by telling a single false story. They fail by ensuring that no complete story can ever exist at once.
Records are fragmented across agencies, processes, and moments in time. Later documents overwrite earlier knowledge. Silence is treated as absence. Aggregation replaces sequence.
Pre-Method Reconstruction exists to reverse that condition.
The rule of this phase
If you feel insight, explanation, or certainty during this phase, you are moving too fast. The only permitted activity is reconstruction.
What reconstruction actually means
- collecting all material without judging relevance
- refusing institutional document boundaries
- splitting aggregated records into atomic events
- preserving gaps, silence, and discontinuity
- treating time as primary and meaning as deferred
You are not looking for patterns. You are making patterns possible.
The kind of work involved
This phase is dominated by tasks that feel unproductive:
- splitting hundreds of pages without knowing why
- extracting CAD communications that appear trivial
- preserving blank pages and temporal gaps
- re-labelling documents without interpreting them
- working for long periods without narrative payoff
This is normal. It is not a sign of failure.
What you must not do here
- do not explain motives
- do not reconcile contradictions
- do not infer intent
- do not decide outcomes
- do not argue your case
All of those belong later. None of them belong here.
How you know this phase is working
- you feel lost but not confused
- documents stop feeling authoritative and start feeling situated
- time becomes clearer while meaning remains unclear
- contradictions accumulate without demanding resolution
When this phase ends
This phase ends only when:
- no document remains un-atomised
- no event floats outside time
- all material can be placed without explanation
