The educational task is not to make schools imitate games. It is to give each learner the means to author, hold and understand a personal provenance record in which experimentation, correction, transfer and accumulated capability remain visible.
Abstract
During the spread of home computers, games consoles and interactive software, a widening cognitive gap developed between the learning environments available outside school and the record structures used inside it. Interactive systems rewarded exploration, recurrence, strategy, rapid correction and the accumulation of state. Formal education remained heavily dependent on terminal assessment, prescribed routes and records that often treated unsuccessful attempts as error, underperformance or non-compliance rather than as visible stages in capability formation.
This paper argues that the gap cannot be closed by adding more screens, gamification or digital content to the classroom. The problem is architectural. Education must teach each learner to create and hold a personal provenance record of how capability forms through time. A three-stage temporal-authoring pathway—record formation, meaning formation and relational formation—provides that reorientation. It allows the learner to preserve attempts, evidence, feedback, support, revision, transfer and causal relation without collapsing development into a final grade. Schools and other institutions may contribute authenticated observations and assessments, but they do not own the learner’s record.
The wider significance is civic. A learner trained to distinguish sequence from causation, repetition from corroboration, recording from proof, correction from erasure and outcome from formation becomes better equipped to participate in record-dependent society. The same stable visual grammar can support multiple domain profiles while retaining fixed symbols and colours. Education thereby becomes the first layer of a shared civic provenance infrastructure in which people learn to hold, inspect and selectively share provenance of their own rather than depend on institutions to define them through fragmented records.
1. The gap was produced by competing feedback systems
The educational gap is often described as a conflict between modern technology and an outdated school system. That description is incomplete. The more important change was the emergence of a competing feedback environment outside the classroom.
Home computers and gaming systems placed increasingly sophisticated interactive environments into ordinary domestic life. These systems did not merely present information. They required users to act, observe consequence, revise strategy, build procedural memory and move through complex rule structures. A player learned by doing, often without first possessing a complete verbal account of the system. Failure was frequent but rarely terminal. It supplied information for the next attempt.

This did not mean that every game or computer activity was educationally valuable. The important point is structural: interactive environments trained users to understand state, consequence, recurrence, strategy and adaptation. Schools often failed to recognise that cognitive expansion because their official records remained focused on final output.
2. Why schools could not compete with the feedback loop
The difficulty was not simply a shortage of technology. Schools could install computers and still preserve the same underlying assessment architecture. A digital worksheet remains a worksheet. A scored platform can reproduce the same terminal logic more efficiently without becoming a developmental record.
The deeper mismatch lay in what each environment treated as meaningful. Interactive systems treated the route as operationally significant: the current state depended on previous actions, failed attempts revealed constraints, and progress became visible through accumulated capability. Formal education often privileged the outcome while discarding the route.
Where experimentation diverged from the expected method, the institution could classify it negatively. An unconventional attempt might become an error; hesitation might become weakness; repeated testing might become lack of discipline; refusal to accept an unexplained rule might become a behaviour concern. The system therefore risked punishing precisely the exploratory cognition that interactive environments were strengthening.
The problem was not that learners stopped learning. It was that much of the learning taking place outside the classroom no longer fitted the school’s record model.
3. The mistake of superficial gamification
A common response has been to imitate the surface features of games: points, badges, levels, streaks and competitive dashboards. These devices can increase engagement, but they do not resolve the underlying problem. They may simply attach a more attractive interface to the same compressed record.
The educational lesson of interactive technology is not that every task should feel like a game. It is that learning systems should preserve state, support recurrence, expose feedback, permit correction and make formation inspectable. The required change is therefore not cosmetic but constitutional within the record architecture.
A system genuinely aligned with the cognitive gap must be able to answer more than whether a learner succeeded. It must enable the learner to preserve what they attempted, which evidence existed, what changed, what intervention mattered, whether the capability transferred and whether later performance became independent. The resulting record belongs to the learner; institutional contributions remain typed, attributable and limited to what the contributor can properly attest.
4. Temporal authorship as the reorientation
The three-stage authoring pathway provides a practical response because it reorganises the educational record around the learner’s authorship of formation rather than the institution’s terminal assertion.
4.1 Stage One: record formation
The learner creates and holds a personal chronology of significant events: what happened, what was attempted or made, what was different from before, what helped, what can now be done and whose account is being recorded. At first this may be supported by a teacher, tutor or parent, but the educational direction is toward increasing learner authorship and custody. Institutional observations may be added as separate, authenticated contributions; they do not overwrite the learner’s account or become ownership of the whole record.
At this stage, failed attempts do not disappear. They remain available as prior states. The learner sees that the final result did not arrive fully formed and that the earlier state has evidential value rather than merely representing deficiency.
4.2 Stage Two: meaning formation
The learner then classifies the chronology without flattening unlike events. Feedback is distinguished from assessment; support from dependency; barrier from incapacity; revision from failure; practice from demonstrated capability. Evidence remains typed according to its source and function, allowing the learner to see where a teacher, institution, automated system or other contributor has added material and what authority that contribution carries.
This is where the system corrects the educational punishment of experimentation. An unsuccessful attempt can be recognised as exploration, diagnosis, revision or prerequisite formation rather than being forced into a single negative category.
4.3 Stage Three: relational formation
The learner authors backward relations explaining why an earlier state matters to a later one. An authorised contributor may propose or authenticate a relation within their competence, but the learner’s record must preserve who authored it and whether the learner accepted, contested or revised it. A later capability may incorporate earlier feedback, depend on a prerequisite, reactivate a barrier, transfer a method into a new context or demonstrate that a particular support route enabled progress.
The relation is inspectable rather than implied. This develops causal discipline: sequence is not automatically causation, and a persuasive story is not substituted for a tested developmental path.
5. The learner owns the provenance record
The system is not a richer institutional dossier. Each learner has a personal provenance record that travels with them. The learner is its primary author and custodian, progressively learning how to record achievement, failure, uncertainty, correction, support, transfer and developing independence.
Teachers, schools, awarding bodies and automated systems may contribute evidence, observations or assessments, but every contribution remains visibly attributed to its source and limited to that source’s authority. No contributor silently becomes the learner’s voice, and no institution acquires ownership of the whole record merely because it hosted part of the learner’s education.
The learner must be able to inspect the record, challenge a contribution, add a response, preserve correction history, export a durable copy and selectively disclose only what is relevant to a receiving context. The record should remain usable when the learner changes institution and should not be converted without consent into a behavioural, risk or surveillance profile.
The school authenticates what it contributes. The learner owns the continuing account of how they formed.
6. From terminal judgment to inspectable formation
The reoriented system does not abolish standards, examinations or institutional judgment. It changes their position. An examination becomes one evidence-bearing event contributed to the learner’s personal provenance record rather than the whole educational object or an institutional claim to own the learner’s formation.
This gives standards provenance. A receiving institution can see not only that a result was achieved, but—subject to the learner’s selective disclosure—whether the capability was corrected after feedback, repeated independently, transferred across contexts and sustained through time. The learner is no longer represented solely by the institution’s final compression and does not lose the record when leaving that institution.

7. A stable visual grammar across changing profiles
The architecture requires a stable visual alphabet. Colours, symbols and structural conventions remain constant across profiles. Their substantive meanings change according to the loaded taxonomy and grammar.
This is essential to public learning. A citizen should not be required to relearn the visual instrument whenever the domain changes. The learner instead acquires a stable method of reading: recognise the class slot, identify the node or edge function, inspect the active profile definition, traverse the relation and descend into evidence.
An educational profile, legal profile, administrative profile or employment profile may therefore assign different domain meanings to the same visual slots while preserving the same symbols and colours. The visual syntax remains learnable; the semantic vocabulary remains declared and domain-specific.

8. The civic consequence
The educational importance extends beyond improved assessment. Modern citizens live inside systems that continuously record, classify and act upon them. Automated summaries, institutional databases and repeated assertions can acquire authority without preserving their formation. Personal temporal authorship gives the learner a countervailing capacity: an inspectable record they hold, through which external contributions can be compared with lived sequence and evidence.
Temporal authorship creates a practical civic grammar. Learners gradually internalise distinctions that later allow them to participate more precisely in systems of record:
- Sequence is not causation.
- Repetition is not corroboration.
- Recording is not proof.
- Persistence is not equal responsibility.
- Correction is not erasure.
- Outcome is not formation.
A citizen equipped with these distinctions can identify whether a disagreement concerns source, evidence type, authorship, chronology, classification, inherited repetition or asserted causal relation. Because the citizen has learned to maintain provenance of their own, they become harder to mis-record and harder to deceive, while institutions remain accountable for the records and decisions they contribute.
9. Bridging the State and its base
The distance between the State and its base has grown partly because institutions operate through increasingly complex record systems while citizens receive only their terminal outputs. Decisions arrive as conclusions, labels, notices and determinations. The route by which those states formed is fragmented across systems or inaccessible in practice, while the person often holds no connected record of their own.
A population educated through personal temporal provenance acquires the capacity to inspect that route and preserve an independent account of formation. The State and citizen can reason from the same categories of source, authorship, evidence, classification, correction and relation. Lawful governability becomes reciprocal: the institution can state why it acted, and the citizen can compare that account with a person-held record and challenge the exact structural defect rather than being confined to general objection.
This does not make citizens easier to control. It makes lawful administration easier to perform because the records on which action depends become more inspectable and contestable.
10. Institutional implications
Reorientation to the cognitive gap requires changes in curriculum, assessment, record design and custodial assumptions rather than a single new subject.
- Chronology creation should begin with learners authoring their own experience of development, not with institutions creating a more detailed file about them.
- Assessment systems should contribute authenticated evidence to the learner’s record and preserve attempts, feedback and correction where these are material to capability formation.
- Learner, teacher, institutional and automated contributions must remain distinguishable by authorship, authority and date.
- Learners must be able to inspect, contest and correct contributed material without pretending an earlier state never existed.
- The full relational grammar should be unlocked through demonstrated authorship capability, not merely age or interface complexity.
- The learner should retain a durable personal copy or export, control selective disclosure, and not lose provenance when changing school, course, employer or jurisdiction.
11. The larger proposition
The advances associated with gaming and home computing demonstrated that ordinary users could learn complex systems through interaction, recurrence and feedback. Formal education did not fail because it lacked intelligence or technology. It failed to adapt its record structure to the cognition that those environments were producing.
The answer is not to compete for attention through entertainment. It is to recognise and formalise the deeper capacities already being developed: systems intuition, experimentation, state awareness, correction, transfer and strategic traversal.
Temporal provenance turns those capacities into a personal educational and civic instrument. It records formation without replacing judgment, makes experimentation visible without romanticising every deviation, and gives the learner a disciplined way to explain how capability emerged. Institutions contribute to that record under declared authorship; they do not own the person’s developmental history.
Conclusion
The cognitive gap grew because interactive technology changed how people learned outside school faster than formal education changed how learning was recorded inside it. Gaming and home computing normalised immediate feedback, safe failure, accumulated state and learner-directed experimentation. Schools often continued to compress development into final outcomes and could punish divergence from the prescribed route while retaining ownership of the only recognised record.
A three-stage temporal-authoring system reorients education to that gap. Each learner creates and holds a personal provenance record. The learner preserves the path before classifying it, classifies without flattening, and authors causal relations only after the record exists. Teachers and institutions may add authenticated contributions, but those contributions remain distinct and do not displace learner ownership. The system retains fixed colours and symbols as a stable visual alphabet while allowing domain-specific profiles to change their meanings.
The result is more than a better educational portfolio. It is an educational foundation for personal and civic provenance: a population capable of showing how capability formed, understanding how records acquire authority, and comparing institutional conclusions with person-held evidence. The long-term advance lies in making sophisticated causal and evidential reasoning—and custody of one’s own formation—part of ordinary citizenship rather than a specialist skill acquired only after institutional failure.
