Many people learned to experiment, retry and solve problems through games and home computers. Schools often recorded only the final result. This system teaches each learner to create and hold their own record of how learning happened.
What this paper is about
This paper explains one simple idea: people often learn in ways that ordinary school records do not show, and each learner should be able to keep an inspectable record of that learning for themselves.
Outside school, games and home computers gave many learners quick feedback. They could try something, see what happened, change their approach and try again. The system remembered where they had reached.
Inside school, the official record often showed only the end result: a mark, grade, behaviour comment or certificate. The attempts, corrections, support and progress in between could disappear, and the recognised record usually remained the institution’s property rather than the learner’s.
The gap is not only about technology. It is about who records learning, what is preserved and who gets to hold the resulting account.
1. What changed outside the classroom
Games and home computers created a strong learning loop. The user did not need to get everything right first time. The system gave a response and allowed another attempt.
- Feedback was immediate.
- Mistakes were part of learning.
- The user could repeat a task.
- Progress could be seen.
- The user could test different routes.
- Complex rules could be learned through use.
This helped people build confidence with systems. They learned to look for patterns, test cause and effect, remember earlier states and adjust their actions.
2. Why the classroom record fell behind
Schools could use computers and still keep the same old record system. A digital test can still record only right or wrong. A learning platform can still reduce a long process to one score.
The problem becomes serious when experimentation is treated as failure or poor behaviour. A learner may be exploring a different route, testing an idea or working through uncertainty. The record may simply say that the learner was wrong, slow, difficult or off task.
This can create a false picture of the person. The learner's actual progress may be greater than the official record suggests, yet the learner may have no connected record of their own with which to show what actually happened.
3. What the new system changes
The system teaches the learner to build a personal provenance record in three stages. Each stage adds more detail, but the first stage is useful on its own. The record belongs to the learner and travels with them; schools and other contributors add clearly identified material rather than owning the whole account.
Stage One: record what happened
The learner records a small number of important events in time. A teacher, tutor or parent may help at first, but the aim is increasing independence. The questions are ordinary:
- What happened?
- What did the learner try or make?
- What was different from before?
- What helped or changed?
- What can the learner do now?
- Whose account is being recorded?
This gives the learner a visible history that they hold and can continue using. The final result no longer erases the earlier attempts, and changing school does not mean losing the only connected account of how capability formed.
Stage Two: say what kind of event it was
The next stage lets the learner add simple distinctions. An event might be practice, feedback, support, a barrier, revision, transfer or demonstrated capability. A teacher or institution may also add a contribution, but its authorship remains separate and visible.
This matters because difficulty is not always incapacity. Support is not always dependency. Correction is not failure. Repetition can show practice or growing confidence.
Stage Three: show how earlier events matter later
The final stage lets the learner link a later event back to an earlier one and state why the earlier event matters. Other contributors may propose or authenticate links within their role, but the record shows who authored each relationship.
For example, a later success may depend on earlier practice, use feedback from a teacher, overcome a repeated barrier or apply an old skill in a new setting.
The link is not just a line. It gives a reason that another person can inspect.
4. The record belongs to the learner
The school does not own the learner’s provenance. The learner keeps the continuing record and can take it to a new school, college, employer or other setting.
Teachers and institutions can add signed or otherwise authenticated contributions: an assessment, observation, certificate, feedback note or evidence of support. The record keeps those contributions separate from the learner’s own account, so every reader can see who said what and on what basis.
As the learner develops, they should gain increasing control over authorship, correction, export and selective sharing. A younger learner may need substantial support; the educational purpose is to build the capacity to maintain personal provenance independently.
The institution contributes evidence. The learner keeps the continuing record.
5. A simple learning example
A learner struggles to complete a written task. The ordinary record might say: 'Did not meet the standard.'
The fuller record may show:
- The learner understood the subject when speaking.
- The first written attempt was disorganised.
- A worker helped the learner break the task into sections.
- The second attempt was clearer.
- The learner later used the same method without help.
The important finding is not simply that the learner eventually passed. The learner's own record shows how capability formed, what assistance mattered and whether the support became independent skill.
The learner records and owns the route, not only the institutionally certified destination.
6. Why fixed colours and symbols matter
The visual system uses the same colours and symbols across different profiles. A legal graph, education graph or employment graph can use different meanings, but the visual positions stay stable.
This allows people to learn one way of reading the system. They recognise the visual pattern, then check what that pattern means in the active profile.
The colours and symbols are therefore not the meaning itself. They are stable places in the visual grammar. The profile supplies the meaning for that field of work.
7. What educators and support practitioners need to do
A person supporting learning does not need to become a specialist in graph theory. Their role is to help the learner become a competent author and custodian of personal provenance:
- Help the learner record important events in the correct order.
- Keep the learner's account separate from professional observations.
- Contribute evidence under clear authorship rather than taking ownership of the record.
- Do not turn one failed attempt into a permanent label.
- Record corrections without deleting the earlier state.
- Support the learner to inspect, question and selectively share the record.
- Check the source before accepting repeated information as confirmation.
The renderer is read-only. It shows the graph the learner and authorised contributors have already authored. It does not decide what happened, rewrite the record or transfer ownership to the institution.
8. What the system is trying to prevent
Records can become harmful when an early description is repeated without being checked. Each later record may make the statement look more reliable even though every version came from the same source.
The system teaches six useful checks:
- An earlier event is not automatically the cause of a later event.
- Several repetitions are not the same as several independent sources.
- Something written in an official record is not automatically proved.
- A continuing problem does not mean every later person has equal responsibility.
- Correcting a record should not hide the fact that the earlier version existed.
- A final result does not explain how that result was formed.
9. Personal provenance: the person is not only a subject of records
The wider purpose is not to give schools, employers or the State more control over people. It is to correct an existing imbalance. At present, institutions usually hold separate records about a person and then use those records to imply identity, capability, risk or need. The person may experience the consequences without possessing a clear, connected account of how those conclusions were formed.
Personal provenance reverses that position. Each learner holds and progressively authors an inspectable history of their own development, circumstances, evidence and recorded interactions. Institutional records can contribute, but no single institution owns the whole account or speaks as though its fragment is the person.
This is not a system for directing how people should develop. It is a system for reducing misalignment between lived reality and institutional description. Where an account is incomplete, wrongly classified or repeated without checking, the difference can be shown. Where support led to capability, that formation can be preserved. Where a record was corrected, the correction can remain visible without pretending the earlier version never existed.
The aim is therefore greater freedom through better alignment: the learner can carry evidence of how capability and identity formed, inspect what others contributed, add a response, export a durable copy and selectively share what is relevant, while institutions remain responsible only for the records and decisions they contribute.
A learner should not depend on a school or the State to imply that they have provenance. They should learn to hold, author, inspect and selectively share provenance of their own.
10. Why this matters beyond school
Adults are affected by records in health, housing, employment, benefits, policing, education and the courts. Most people receive the final decision but cannot see how the record behind it was formed.
A person who has learned temporal authorship can ask better questions: Who first recorded this? What was the source? Was it checked? Was it repeated from the same place? What changed later? Which earlier event is said to explain the present decision?
This does not make the person difficult to govern. It makes lawful administration easier because errors can be identified precisely and corrected openly.
11. The main point
The cognitive gap grew because interactive technology trained people to learn through feedback, retry and accumulated state, while formal education continued to record mostly final outcomes.
The answer is not to make every lesson look like a game. The answer is to teach each learner to create and hold a better record of learning.
A chronology shows the learner's path. Classification explains what happened within that path. Relationships show why earlier events matter later. Together, these create a person-held, inspectable account of capability to which institutions may contribute without taking ownership.
The same structure supports personal provenance beyond education: not a State-owned or school-owned dossier, but a person-held and contestable account that can reduce the distance between lived reality and institutional records.
The system helps people become authors of their own provenance: harder to mis-record, harder to deceive and better able to take part in lawful systems of record.
